Anaconda Trailer Reveals Chinese Remake Of 1997 Monster Movie

A new trailer for Anaconda reveals the Chinese remake of the iconic 1997 jungle adventure film that starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, and Ice Cube.

The new trailer for Anaconda reveals an upcoming remake of the monster film. Anaconda was first released in 1997, following the plot of a National Geographic film crew who is taken hostage by an unhinged hunter who forces them to join him on a quest to capture the world’s largest snake. The 1997 survival thriller featured a leading cast including Jon Voight, Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stoltz, Ice Cube, and Owen Wilson.

A new trailer from HKCinema reveals the Chinese remake of Anaconda.

The trailer begins by showing a look at a giant snake constricting an adult man. The trailer then scales back to unveil some of the lore surrounding the snake, including a powerful snake called Scarlet Naga. Soon, the Anaconda trailer devolves into a serpent-filled, action-packed look at the remake.

Can The Anaconda Remake Match the Original?

2024’s Anaconda is co-directed by Hesheng Xiang and Qiuliang Xiang, the directorial duo behind the 2018 Chinese action film Monkey King and City of Demons. It features a leading cast including Nita Lei, Terrence Yin, Paul Che, and Xingchen Wang. Yin is an actor who has occasionally crossed over into American films, including Lara Croft in 2003.

Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid is the second entry in the franchise, and features arguably the most disturbing death in the series.

In 2024, it will be hard to fully recapture the campy magic of 1997’s Anaconda. While it was an action film, there is an inherent goofiness to the ‘90s film, driven partially by its Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez led-cast. Anaconda was not well-reviewed among critics, getting a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a lower 24% among viewers. Nonetheless, Anaconda has persisted in the cultural memory, as evidenced by its sequels and 2024 remake.

One of the principal reasons for the 1997 Anaconda’s cult classic status is because of the creation of its monster. Partially animatronic and partially CGI, the snake’s appearance in Anaconda became a critical element of the film. Using modern technology to more fully CGI animate the snake may distill the campy impact of the film. Based on the trailer, the 2024 remake of Anaconda will lean heavily into the film’s action. Hopefully, the Anaconda remake can do that successfully as it prepares for release later this year.
