London Southend Airport Remains Closed After Deadly Plane Crash
July 28, 2025
Operations at London Southend Airport have been suspended following a tragic aircraft crash on Sunday afternoon, according to airport CEO Jude Winstanley. The emergency unfolded just before 4:00 p.m. BST when Essex Police responded to reports of a 12-meter aircraft engulfed in flames.
Dutch operator Zeusch Aviation confirmed that its flight SUZ1 was involved in the crash and stated it is fully cooperating with investigators. The aircraft had originally departed from Athens, made a scheduled stop in Pula, Croatia, and had briefly landed at Southend before its planned return to Lelystad in the Netherlands.
Eyewitness John Johnson of Billericay recounted the harrowing moment, saying the aircraft had just taken off when it sharply veered to the left. “It looked like it was about to flip upside down,” he told the BBC. “Seconds later, it slammed into the ground and exploded into a massive fireball.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash as the airport remains temporarily shut down.
